The Holy Spirit

The Attributes of God in the Holy Spirit

God is ETERNAL — Hebrews 9:14 speaks of the eternal Spirit.

14how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

God is OMNISCIENT — Acts 15:18 – 18“Known to God from eternity are all His works.

Paul in I Cor. 2:10-11 tells us that the things of God are known only by the Spirit. à 10But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

God is OMNIPRESENT — In Ps.139:7 David says that the Holy Spirit is everywhere.

7Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?

God is OMNIPOTENT — In Lk. 1:35 the angel speaks of the Holy Spirit as the power of the Highest

35And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.

The Works of God found in the Holy Spirit

The Spirit was active in CREATION.

Gen. 1:1 – Elohim – indicates the Trinity worked together during creation.
Gen. 1:2 – speaks of the Spirit moving on the face of the waters.
Gen. 1:26 – gives us glimpse of the Trinity working in harmony to create man, “Let Us make man in Our image.”
Ps. 104:30 – also speaks of the Spirit’s part in creation.
30You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; And You renew the face of the earth.

The Spirit gives LIFE.

In II Cor. 3:6, Paul tells us that the letter of the Law kills… but the Spirit gives life à 6who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

In Jn. 6:63 Jesus also says that the Spirit makes us alive à 63It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

Rom. 8:10 à “10And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.”

The Holy Spirit inspired the WRITING of the Bible.

II Pet. 1:21 declares “but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”

The Holy Spirit WORKS WITH the Father and the Son.

I Cor. 12:4-6 declares that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit work together in the ministries of the Church à 4There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.
